Time For A Fall 3 Day Detox

It was pretty clear tonight that fall is here. The air was crisp and the first signs of changing color could be seen in the tops of the trees that surround us.
We made a big bonfire and enjoyed the warmth of the fire and friends. It was a good night.
The beginning of fall is a sign that it is once again time to plan for a 3 day detox. I try to do it on a regular basis, four times a year with the changing of the seasons

Berry-Nut Yogurt Parfait Recipe

I found this and a lot more great recipes from  Eliza Domestica at elizadomestica.com/

Really worth checking out her blog...unless your not a fan of Berry Nut Yogurt Parfait or Peach Raspberry Yogurt Smoothies.

Seriously, many of her ideas will make a nice addition to any body detox diet.

Ingredients

Berries – all kinds are great, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries (note: I like to mix and match different fruits, depending on what is in season, stone fruits like peaches and apricots are great and I love chopped apples in my yogurt, too)

Yogurt (plain Greek yogurt and Activia yogurt are my absolute favorites)

Toasted nuts! (walnuts, almonds, and pecans are my favorite)

Directions - Pre-toast nuts the night before to save on time. Simply pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, spread 1 cup of your nuts of choice onto a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Let nuts cool before mixing in with yogurt.

Mix it all together and enjoy!

Peanutty Caramel Apple "Gramwiches"

This month, the American Heart Association released its flagship cookbook, aptly titled The New American Heart Association Cookbook, 8th Edition, and affectionately dubbed "Big Red." It contains more than 600 heart healthy recipes, including 150 brand-new ones.

Here is their recipe for a quick and easy sweet snack.

Peanutty Caramel Apple "Gramwiches"

Serves 6; 1 gramwich per serving

  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons fat-free caramel topping
  • 3 low-fat graham crackers (3 rectangular flats), each broken into 2 squares
  • 1 large apple

In a small bowl, stir together the peanut butter and caramel topping. Spread on the graham crackers.

Holding the apple upright, cut 6 lengthwise slices, each 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide, from the sides. (Discard the core and reserve any remaining apple for munching.) Place one apple slice on each graham cracker square.

OK Go - Pretty Cool Video

I will admit to ocassionaly spending some unproductive time on youtube.
Yesterday I was checking out gospel performances and tonight has been....well, random.

Anyway, this one was on the most viewed list and I gave it a click. Glad I did.

This has nothing to do with body detox, raw foods, health, karma, or any of that other important stuff....just thought it was cool and worth a share.

Without further ado...enjoy! ( ps: pay attention at 2:49}

Weird Food Names

By Amanda Greene Posted September 15, 2010 from WomansDay.com

While menus aren't usually considered works of comedy, a particular dish's name—like “bubble and squeak” or “burgoo”––occasionally will elicit belly laughs. Thanks to their unusual origins or mangled etymology (like a game of telephone), the food names below are a humorous change from the standard fare.

Spotted Dick

Though spotted dick is a simple English dessert made from pudding and dried fruit, it induces giggles in preteens around the world. The name, which may have originated in the mid 19th century, describes the dish: the dried fruits, which are usually currants, look like spots, and "dick" is a version of the word dough, pudding or thick (which describes the dish's consistency). Stinking Bishop

Anyone who's been within smelling distance of this particular cheese understands the first part of its name: The wheels are said to have an odor that brings to mind dirty socks and wet towels. But the second half is purely coincidental. It's actually derived from Stinking Bishop pears, whose juice the cheese is immersed in. The pears got their name from their farmer, Mr. Bishop. Headcheese

Oddly enough, headcheese isn't cheese at all. But you're going to wish it were. The gelatinous meat is made from chopped-up bits of the head of a pig, calf or cow—including the tongue—and sometimes the feet and heart. The origins of its name are unclear, but it's been suggested the source of the name could be either because the recipe used to contain cheese or because of the connected etymology of the words cheese and molded (molds are used to make headcheese). Bubble and Squeak

Though it may sound more like a bath toy than a hearty meal, bubble and squeak is actually a traditional English dish made with leftovers from a holiday dinner or Sunday roast. The name comes from the sounds the food—often pork, ham, sweet potatoes and root vegetables––makes when it's frying in the pan. Photo: Ian Garlick/Getty Images.

Bangers and Mash

To us it sounds more like a rock band, but this dish consisting of sausage and mashed potatoes is popular pub fare in England. Across the pond, sausages are known as bangers, which can be traced back to World War I, when food shortages required people to pack sausages with a variety of fillings, causing them to pop and hiss—or make a "bang"—when cooked. Burgoo

Anyone from Kentucky can tell you that burgoo is a stew made from multiple meats simmered with veggies. As for the name, it's a toss-up as to its origins. It could be a variation on the French word for meat stew, ragout, a mispronunciation of barbecue or an interpretation of bulgur, from which burgoo was originally made. Devils on Horseback

A tasty treat with an ominous-sounding name, devils on horseback are prunes or dates stuffed with chutney and wrapped in bacon. The name is thought to have been inspired by its contrast to angels on horseback, which are oysters—whose curled edges resemble wings––wrapped in bacon. Photo: Dorling Kindersley/Getty.

Priest Choker

Bearing no relation to the Stinking Bishop, strozzapreti (which means "priest choker" in Italian) is an elongated form of cavatelli pasta. Centuries ago in Italy it was common practice to let priests eat for free. So it is said that some restaurant owners wished the priests would choke on this thick pasta before they could get to their next (more expensive) course. Photo: iStockphoto.

Limping Susan

Hoppin' John, a Southern dish made from rice and black-eyed peas, has a less able-bodied cousin: Limping Susan, which is made with okra instead of peas. While Hoppin' John's name is credited to a variety of sources (the jumping around of the peas in the pan or the legendary servant John who invented the dish), it's anyone's guess as to where the slow-footed okra dish's name derived from. Whoopie Pie

These tasty cake-like confections have been making people happy for years. In fact, their name is believed to have come from the gleeful "Whoopie!" that Amish farmers would shout when they found one in their lunchbox. Hey, without electricity, it's the little things in life. Photo: Martin Jacobs/Getty Images.

Meditation: Learn how to Relax

"Walking in nature, sitting quietly, painting (art), singing can all be forms of meditation. Focus on what inspires you whether it be a piece of music, a reading from a book, or even dreaming of being on a beach where no one else is; total peace of mind. You can meditate anywhere, and the great thing about meditation for healthy living is that you do not need to put on a pair of tights or be in any special position" (source September 12, 2010 | By admin In Healthy Living)

Meditation is not about following someone's video guide or buying the right outfit for a yoga class. At it's core, meditation is simply learning how to relax and free your mind and body from the stress that is life. There will be no "life without stress"...just not gonna happen. But you should regularly find a little time to take a little "vacation" from the day to day.

Nothing wrong with yoga...just not my thing. For me, it's sitting on my porch with a good cup of coffee and my feet up on the railing. Just sitting and appreciating the sites and sounds of the nature around me. Just for reference, I included a photo of my "front yard" at sunset Gives me time to really relax and forget about life's pressures and appreciate the beauty that is always all around me. Works for me...what's your thing?

Whatever it is..make it a regular part of your day and....just relax.

Miracle diet pill! (with teeny-tiny side effect)

Apologize in advance if your sensitive to the language in this video...but it's just too funnnyyy not to post.

And so to the point...magic pills are not the answer. Body detox is best achieved through lifestyle changes...not from a bottle of pills.

That is, unless you want the results so eloquently detailed below....

Baked Penne and Roasted Veg

Ran across this recipe for a healthy and delicious sounding addition to your recipe files.

Baked Penne and Roasted Vegetables
  • 2 red peppers, cored and cut into 1-inch wide stripes
  • 2 zucchini, quartered lengthwise and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 summer squash, quartered lengthwise and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 cremini mushrooms, halved
  • 1 yellow onion, peeled and sliced into 1-inch strips
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian herb mix or herbs de Provence
  • 1 pound penne pasta
  • 3 cups marinara sauce (store bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup grated fontina cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated smoked mozzarella
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen peas, thawed
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan, plus 1/3 cup for topping
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

On a baking sheet, toss the peppers, zucchini, squash, mushrooms, and onions with olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and dried herbs. Roast until tender, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook for about 6 minutes. Since you will be cooking the pasta a second time in the oven, you want to make sure the inside is still hard. Drain in a colander.

In a large bowl, toss the drained pasta with the roasted vegetables, marinara sauce, cheeses, peas, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Using a wooden spoon, gently mix, until all the pasta is coated with the sauce and the ingredients are combined.

Pour the pasta into a greased 9 by 13-inch pan. Top with the remaining 1/3 cup Parmesan and butter pieces. Bake until top is golden and cheese melts, about 25 minutes.

Eat Less - Move More

Simplest and most effective diet plan ever...Eat Less - Move More.
What a concept! Direct...to the point...effective...inexpensive.
Why isn't everyone doing this?

As you will see in the video below...it's a bit more complicated than that.

Just between you and me...she could do with a good 3 day detox.

3 Day Detox Lettuce Diet? Don't think so!

Ok..I advocate a 3 day detox to be done 3 or 4 times a year....but this isn't exactly what I recommend.
Actually a pretty funny video. He blew it with the after detox feast.

In spite of the occasional video for fun, a 3 day detox is a good idea for most of us (without the burgers and shakes).
